Elton Room

Our favourite room has got to be the Elton Room on the first floor of Armada House.  With its cosy atmosphere, oak panneled walls and gorgeous fireplace, the Elton Room is a perfect space for celebrations as well as meeting and networking events.  We thought we'd share the history of this space and why its so unique to our venue.

The Boardroom for Bristol Waterworks

Armada House was purpose built for the expanding Bristol Waterworks company and finished in 1903.  The Elton Room at Armada House was modelled on the Drawing Room from the previous premesis on Small Street, that once was the home of the Elton Family.  The black and white photograph shows in detail the Elton Drawing Room from Small Street- the strapwork ceiling, gas lights, oak panelling and an iron grate set within the stone fireplace surround.  These features, except for the gas lamps and the iron firepace were brought over to the new bulding. The Elton Room was used as a boardroom during the Bristol Waterworks ownership.

Elton Fireplace

With its smartly carved columns, the swirled mantle design and the inscription set into the head of the fireplace, there is something grand about the presence of the fireplace in the Elton Room.  We know a little bit about the history of the fireplace, which was originally made for the Elton Family of Clevedon Court.  By looking at the gold letters in the centre of the inscription they read E above and  A M below.  E stands for the Elton family name, A for Abraham and M for Mary. The others are digits situated in the corners of the inscription read 1700 from left to right which indicates the date that the fireplace was finished.  Sir Abraham Elton and his wife Mary lived in a set of three houses situated from 6-8 Small Street, used mainly as their town house.

The Elton Room is a perfect backdrop for meetings and conferences to celebrations such as wedding ceremonies and private dinner parties. Throughout the year the Elton Room gets a great deal of natural light with direct sunshine in the afternoons.  Its cosy and intimate atmosphere is enjoyable for guests and delegates for a variety of events.
